About the Department

PG & Research Department of Commerce was established in the year 2007-2008. The aim of the department was to create quality teachers, researchers and to equip the students to meet the skill and requirements of the corporate world. The Department has dedicated and hardworking teachers along with a commitment to facilitate an all-round development of the students by sensitizing them towards the ethical and social needs of the society.

Presently, the department has 5 M.Phil and 2 Ph.D research supervisors. The department strongly believes to contribute for quality research thereby creating proficient researchers.

Abstract [+] Development of rural areas is one of the prime areas to develop the nation, because the majority of the Indian population resides in the rural areas. Poverty, Unemployment and vulnerable livelihood occurs as an obstacle in faster development of rural areas especially in denser population country like India. To remove such factors in development regression, Government of India initiated by launching National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) scheme in the year 2011with RBI guideline to regulate all the banking sector in India. This paper attempts to study the performance of the scheme by analysing the savings, loan disbursement and loan outstanding of Self Help Groups through Co-operative banks in Vellore district of Tamilnadu. The data was collected for 5 years from 2015-16 to 2019-20 for analysis. Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) and year-to-year increase percentage are computed. The results reveal that the scheme was partial success during the study period due to various reasons such as lack of co-operation from the local project directors of the scheme and banks, demonetization and so on.

Afsar Ahmed In Shanlax International Journal of Commerce, , Apr 2020, Volume: 8(2), Page: 66-73. Abstract [+] Micro-finance institutions (MIFs) acts as a promoter to Self Help Group (SHG) for the development of women members by providing Micro-credit facilities in different terms under varying conditions with/without collateral. This study was conducted among SHGs women members in tribal areas of Yelagiri Hills in Vellore District, Tamil Nadu, in India. All these areas are below the poverty line with unemployment and lack of awareness relating to education, health, nutrition, employment, financial facilities, and entrepreneurship. None Government Organisations (NGOs), Banks/MFIs, and Government organizations are taking a lot of effort to uplift these area’s people by providing guidelines to them. This study focuses on how micro-finance helps the tribal women members to overcome their problem to uplift social conditions. One hundred twenty questionnaires were dis- tributed among the self-help group members. Through exploratory factor analysis, five factors were identified, namely an improvement in the quality of life, personality development, enhancement of social conditions, investment opportunities, and debt repayment. Multiple regression analysis results reveal that improvement in the quality of life, personality development, and enhancement of social has an impact on Social upliftment of tribal women in SHGs through Micro-finance.

Abstract [+] Self Help Groups are the association of two or more poor and needy rural and backward people created fundamentally for the purpose of taking mutual economic benefits out of mutual help solitarily and joint responsibility. The main objective of the study is to evaluate the overall progress of Self Help Groups through Bank Linkage programme. The various parameters such as number of Self help Group’s savings with banks, amount of loans disbursed to Self Help groups through banks, loan outstanding are explored for the period of 10 years from 2007 to 2017. The study has shown a marginal increase in their performance year after year, thus indicating a driver for sustainable growth for entrepreneurs especially women.
